As a supported accommodation provider, Western Pathways will provide a high-quality standard of holistic intervention work, adapted to suit the individual needs of each young person living with us. We believe that every young person has the wherewithal to be successful in their life and make positive change wherever needed. Our holistic approach draws from a wide range of developmental theories and research, underpinned by humanistic and person-centred beliefs and values. These core beliefs and values underpin our work to empower young people to develop greater self-esteem and confidence during their transition into adulthood.

Many young people find the period between their 16th and 18th Birthdays overwhelming as they try to adjust to a higher level of increased responsibility. This is particularly true for young people in their mid to late teens who have a social care background and/or who have experienced significant mental health difficulties. The staff at Western Pathways will provide a warm, caring and supportive environment with an emphasis on treating young people with respect and dignity. Western Pathways will ensure that all work with young people is supported by maintaining clear boundaries, expectations and accountabilities. We also aim for each young person to experience a sense of consistency and security to help build and reinforce a positive sense of identity and belonging.

Young people will be supported to learn how to better regulate and manage their behaviours, extreme emotional responses and self-sabotaging tendencies, which may become increasingly problematic in adulthood. In order to promote and support positive behaviour, Western Pathways will use a structured behavioural management system that identifies (through observation and assessment), pro-active and re-active strategies to maximise wanted behaviour and reduce incidents of unwanted behaviour.

Behaviour management plans are personalised and detailed to enable staff and young people to gain a clear and consistent understanding of how support staff will respond or intervene on each occasion or incident. Under no circumstances will sanctions or restrictions be placed on young people that are detrimental to the objectives of the young person’s support or placement plan.
